Management by Mechanism

More than once I was told of the management cliche, "Startup is managed by individual, medium firm is managed by regulation, and big company is managed by culture"

The mechanism is the foundation of management with scalability. Any company with fair size will pay the price of disorder if they could not keep up their basic mechanism. Without mechanism, the fight between a director and a senior manager will destory the whole group. Talents quit and remainders feel terrible. That's the price for the office politics. There are many many live samples in the company where there has no strict rules, explicit regulations and solid mechanisms.

After my first day in the second employer of my life, I came to realize the extreme value of mechanism in the management area. Just a whole day, I grasp all the required skills by the orientation of group admin. In contrast, I took at least one week to get familiar with the environment and the process in the past.

Submiting the onboard materials, including the crendetials, personal info, and signing various forms cost just about 1 hour; Hands-on demonstration on the working space, such as copy, fax, etc., 1 hour; Orientation on how to use the internal website resources, 1 hour; Training on the process of dealing with the external customers and vendors, 1 hour. And besides, I have seen the process materials which she have collected and compiled in the past year. And all these are delivered by a group admin, really amazing!

I will take more training during the rest of this week. I believe I will learn more in this week than what I learned in the past year.
